The calculator keeps operating cost separate from equipment amortization. Operating cost covers the batch itself. Equipment amortization divides the machine price by the number of lifetime batches in your scenario; it does not predict how long a machine will last.

Electricity has a published range

Harvest Right currently estimates about $1.25–$2.80 in electricity per batch for small and medium home units, $2–$3 for large, and roughly $4 for XL. Those are manufacturer estimates, not a promise for your utility rate or cycle. The page was last checked July 18, 2026. In the default examples, food moves the result more than power

If a medium batch holds 12.5 pounds and the loaded food averages $3 per fresh pound, the food input is $37.50 before power or packaging. A garden surplus may cost much less; premium meat may cost far more. Use the cost of what you actually load—not a national grocery average that does not match your batch.

Packaging and maintenance should be visible

Bags, jars, oxygen absorbers, labels, and pump supplies vary by storage method. The manufacturer also calls for pump-oil service at regular batch intervals on applicable pumps. Freeze Dryer Value keeps packaging and the maintenance reserve as separate editable inputs because the purchase pattern differs by household.

  • Count only packaging used for the batch being compared.
  • Spread bulk purchases across the number of batches they support.
  • Add a pump-oil or maintenance reserve if your setup needs one.
  • Keep labor separate unless you deliberately value your time.
