The calculator's “store equivalent” input means the price of the same finished quantity and servings you expect from one home batch. It does not mean the shelf price of one arbitrary pouch, and it does not mean store price per dry pound multiplied by fresh pounds.

Package counts round up because a shopper generally cannot buy part of a package. Treat any unused extra servings consistently.

- Estimate usable finished servings.
Use your recipe or package serving size rather than raw weight alone.
- Find a plausible store substitute.
Match the food, ingredients, and servings as closely as the market allows.
- Price the full quantity.

At three batches per month, the example models $132.66 in monthly savings. Change the store equivalent from $87.50 to $40 and the same batch loses money. That sensitivity is why Freeze Dryer Value never hides this input behind an “average savings” claim.
Costs the first-pass model excludes
Food prep, tray loading, packaging, cleaning, and record keeping.
Failed batches, food you never consume, or packaging lost to poor storage.
Interest or opportunity cost when the machine is not purchased with cash.
Possible future value is excluded because condition and market demand are uncertain.
To include one of these, add a defensible per-batch amount to the food or supplies input. Keeping the first-pass tool compact is a usability decision, not a claim that these costs are zero.
